To our President-elect:
You said a lot of hurtful things during your campaign. However, you also said that you will be our most unifying president ever. Although you will not even be inaugurated for over two months, the protests and riots in our streets today are your first challenge as president. If you are going to unite us, this is the moment you must start that job. Will you find it within yourself to realize that these protests are born out of abject fear, and will you find a way to convince us all that this fear is misplaced...? Please-- try. You alone can do it.
To the rest of us:
We all have many reasons to worry about our President-elect's vision as outlined in his speeches past. However, in the last few weeks before the election, his tone did soften dramatically. Let us hope that this is the introduction of a new version of the man, who perhaps, even if not entirely redeemable, has at least seen some of the error of his ways and is willing to do better now that the responsibilities of leadership are upon him. In the meantime, while protest if you must, please do not let hatred cloud your mantra of #LoveTrumpsHate. Violence against your fellow people will do nothing to stop the man you fear most. Only united can we stand.
