More Heisler-inspired madness! This little oddity uses a Heisleresque drive system to power its lead and trailing trucks, transforming it from a 4-4-4 to an all-wheel-drive 0-12-0. The drive shafts to the trucks are linked to a gear box on the main driving axle, with the shaft to the lead truck passing under the 3rd axle. Note that the cylinders are inclined to accommodate the short wheel-base of the lead truck.

This was meant to be a turn-of-the-century alternative to the typical 4-driver passenger engines of the era (such as 4-4-2s), which were fast but lacked the power to pull heavy trains. The only problem I see with this design is that unless it was meticulously maintained and oiled, all those shafts and gears could cut back on the running speed. So we’re gonna keep it meticulously maintained and oiled. :D

The lines on the second cart seems kinda too thin. And well dissolving. But eh, that's just my eyes. D:

I love the coloring though. Well done.

Actually, that's a valid point about the lineart that I hadn't noticed– I think it might have happened when I tried to straiten out the image using PhotoStudio, which I have to do sometimes because I have a tendency to draw things crooked. The only thing is that it can also distort the lines a bit.

And thanks!

Amazing work... truly.

Have you ever seen the locomotives used for mountainous regions that had a driveshaft and gearbox along the side of them, instead of all the linkages? (to prevent wheel slippage, I suppose)
:iconatticus-w:
Thank you! :)

I am familiar with the locomotives you speak of (the Shays), but can't say I've ever seen one in person. The unusual design did help prevent slippage (they had a high engine to wheel speed ratio) and helped the locomotives navigate tight curves. Heisler engines were designed for exactly the same reasons, in fact.
:iconkidsupernova:
You sir, are a God among men. How ever did you learn so much about locomotives? I like to think I know quite a bit, but you even know the model names! I bow to you!

It's not that hard-- You can probably count the number of steamer types that don't fit the Whyte system on one hand. :)
