Description
This is a class ES-4 “Steamliner” unit. Though built to pull luxury passenger trains at rail-scorching speeds, the Steamliner is also more than capable of hauling high-priority freight and express shipments. Her high-pressure boiler and over-size cylinders are an unusual combination that may be the secret behind her remarkable power.
A few bits of trivia:
-In order to accommodate her large outboard cylinders, the ES-4’s valve chests are mounted inside the saddle beneath the smokebox.
-The forward half of the engineers’ cab is built over the boiler and is tightly-packed with steam equipment and accessories. Because this area is inaccessible by the crew, the ES-4’s forward cab windows are actually bolted over with metal louvers.
-On a similar note, many ES-4's are built without any windows at all on the cab’s front wall. To provide the engineer with a safe position to view the tracks, these units are generally equipped with side windscreens or bay windows.
-ES-4s have been built in a number of configurations designed to burn either coal or various grades of fuel oil.
