Welcome to Dinosaur Land by Atticus-W Welcome to Dinosaur Land by Atticus-W
Dinosaur Land… my favorite of all the Mario realms of olde!

Something about the size of this place, the bright colors, the cartoony music and the strange new elements impressed me like no other game quite has since.

One thing that always fascinated me… what was at the top of that waterfall coming down the mountain?

It took me years and years to find every goal in this game, and ‘till the very end I hoped a secret path would lead to the top. Of course, one never did… but that was the beauty of this game. It could keep you guessing. And that meant a real, literal sense of exploration, not unlike that experienced in Super Mario 64 six years later.

Well, that turned into more of a reminiscer than I intended, but so be it— SMW was a good game! This kinda started out as a sketch of Yoshi, and the background just sprang up behind ‘im as I got into the theme. I actually had to do a lot of experimentation to get the background colored and shaded in a way that appealed to me. Lemme know how you think it turned out!

Yoshi, Dinosaur Land and everything else © Nintendo

EDIT 9/22: Tweaked the colors a bit-- hopefully it'll look a bit brighter!

Looks great.:) I thought there's just a lake up there. Though now my mind may wander to more "exotic" ideas thanks to your thoughs.

This game certainly had it's irresistible charm... Even after playing it for all these long years, I still enjoy a replay now and then. Great stuff like this game never get old.
I only wish Mario games were more frequent... I mean, not Mario Party's or Karts, but games in the official series.

I know just what you mean. I still have to break this out once in a while in all of its SNES glory. It actually makes a great two-player game, too. :D

And yep, I hear ya there too... though I suppose we can assume that Nintendo puts enough effort into the Marios to prevent them from coming out too frequently. We wouldn't want to trade quality for quantity, after all. :) (And hence the flood of spin-off titles to "hold us over" for the big ones, I suspect! XD)

Yeah, but I still wish games came out more... I mean, SMB 1, 2 and 3, and SMW all came out within a few years of each other, and they were all fantastic. I know it would be hard to ever make games as quickly as that again in this highly competitive market, and they have other projects, but... Well, I guess that explains it

Wow iv never seen a picture like this you should draw more pictures like this. I love how its from this new view since, i loved the game, this makes it really cool from seeing such a new perspective of it. Make some of like where your at Yoshi's house and that huge mountain thing with the yellow button and things would be really cool if you made something like that, Heck have one where its from the first water level looking out to the sunken ghost ship and you can see all the scenery with the water falls and tree world, hell if i could request it, i would request what i just said if you would do it for me, but you probably won't so hey im just saying it would be very cool to see that anyways hope you can respond back it would be nice. =)

Hey, thanks! :D I'm sure this has been done before, because I'm not that creative... XD But still, I'm really delighted that you like it! Those ideas you suggest sound really cool... if you wanted to request one, yeah, that's okay I guess! I'm not sure I'd even do a half-decent job at it (landscapes and "big scenes" in general tend to be one of my failing points) but hey, practice never hurt anyone, either!

The picture is awesome, the background, the landscape, very cool. I like the Yoshi pose. There is one flaw that I immediately noticed: there's a red spike on Yoshi's tail.

Thanks much-- I kinda liked his pose myself, if I may say so! And yeah, I know the red spike on his tail isn't exactly canon, but I'm kinda stubborn about putting it there. No particular idea why. =p

Woah, that's and awesome observation you did there, you know how to see the hidden beauty of the games, turning you into a true Mario fan and gamer.

SMW is awesome, I just replayed and beated it for the "N" time a couple of days ago (with all it's secrets of course), and I was like: "Gee, that's all? I want more of this game!"

Hey and I never even thought what would be at the top of that waterfall, probably because that's not my favorite game (I usually question myself the mysteries involving SMB3 and the Paper Marios) but know that you made me think about it... I'd say the Rainbow Road, who knows, I have to add that to my world map concept of the Mario worlds (I'll eventualy gonna draw it).

Also, the picture you did here is epic, the perspective and all, and how you pictured how big Vanilla dome would look, ...and I see it's closed, this probably was when the Mario bros. entered the Donut Plains by the first time, letting Yoshi introduce em to the brothers.

Wow, thank you very much! I like to imagine what SMW's worldmap would look like in real life. I think it could be adapted into a fantastic 3-D landscape-- if they made it REALLY huge. :)

You know, I was thinking the same sort of thing when I beat SMW. I mean, it had a lot of levels, but I was disapointed to have it end, I think. See, I pretty much grew up with SMB3, so I knew all of that game's secrets since I was 3 or so... SMW was the first game I played that I hadn't grown up with. I got it second-hand when I was about 7 from a brother who lived on his own. Wierd story, but it sorta explains the game's fascination to me.

The Paper Marios are also very good though, and are entirely worthy of deep investigation. :D

Every Mario game is worth vof deep investigation  especially the classic ones, my bro. says that I question stuff that even the game designers never did, like... who's Peach's father, and why is a princess and not a queen, and why if she is the ruler of a bunch of mushrooms... she's human?

Another mystery is... are the worlds of SM64 linked to Bowser's Jr. gaddbrush of SMS? well the paintbrush had the power's to turn alive everything that was drawn with it, and the worlds were painted portraits... and don't forget about "L is Real 2041".

Don't tell me you haven't heard of "The King"? [link] :D

Interesting theory about Junior's brush and the SM64 paintings! I'd kind of like to know what Gadd was thinking when he gave that brush to a Koopa in the first place. Sounds pretty traitorous to me!

Well honestly, I don't count anything that's not in the games like part of the Marioverse... well ok he is mentioned in the eclosed instruction book, but still, why is he a toad and Peach a human? I have the theory that she was adopted by Toadsworth long ago, and since the toads needed a sort of ruler, she was raised as a princess.

Jr. probably tricked or put a trapp to Prof. E. Gadd, and after realising what he have done, he created FLUDD and left it on the Isle Delfino port for Mario to find it... yes, FLUDD was created merely to fight the Gaddbrush.

Ahaha, yes... the enclosed instruction book. The King's lone claim to fame... poor guy.
(Personally, I think he's a human wearing a mushroom hat, but that's just me... he does, very much unlike a mushroomer, have five fingers per hand.)

Junior could have stolen the brush... but he says a strange old man in a white coat GAVE it to him. He could have been lying, of course, but somehow Junior seems just a little bit too young and naive to be a good lier... unlike his dear dad. But I guess we'll never know... XD

Hehe I say he tricked Gadd, even, he probably got the Mario mask (who tranforms him into shadow Mario) so that way he tricked Gadd... thought that now is pointless, since Gadd would have to be colorblind (Like the piantas, lol) to be fooled by Shadow Mario... well, he tricked all of the Pianta people to think he was Mario vandalising their island. *rolls eyes* (Mario characters usually are totally clueless about their surroundings XD)

Well there are tons of ways that Jr. could have tricked Gadd, he is way more clever than his papa (Man, I LOVE Super Mario Sunshine).

Oh, was that from the original game? I thought that map only came with Super Mario Advance 2. :?

Either way, you never see the top in game... and if it is a pool (and I guess it probably is), I'd still like to know how it stays filled! (The intrigue remains unbroken.)
