Politics and life

So, to all you American-types... who’s been following Pres. Obama’s “Cap and Trade” bill?

If you’re unfamiliar with it (since the news is more interested in Michael Jackson, understandably), it’s an energy bill meant to combat the effects of global warming (or “climate change,” or whatever the PC term is for it nowadays) by, for one thing, taxing companies that burn coal and offering incentives to companies that use PC (“green” ) technology (even if such technologies are substantially less efficient than traditional ones, and even if, in the long run, they do nothing particarly to help the environment*). A lot of people on the news have been going on and on about the higher costs of living we’re all going to suffer because of this bill (see that inefficiency bit)... after all, when energy costs are ramped up (a side effect inherent in increasing regulation), not only do we pay more for electricity, but also more for every good manufactured or shipped. Which is... really, every good. So... people don’t like getting hit in the wallet. What else is new?

But that's all small beans as far as I'm concerned. Do you folks know how this bill is going to effect you... personally and directly? 300 or so pages of amendments were added to the bill the night before the House approved it. Did your dear congressmen read these last-minute amendments? Ha. So... did you know that this bill demands such nice little laws as you having to pay to make your house “green”-compliant before you can even sell it? I say! Why I do believe that that infringes on our freedom! :D

This bill also regulates the construction of new homes, dictating that they be installed with such features as electric car jacks for battery-powered cars.

Soon, the Obama administration may be pushing for bills regulating what cars you can buy (they better be green ones!)... what jobs you can perform (you at the coal plant, you’re out!)... where you can live?? (Wouldn’t want you living too far away from the office— that would give your commute too big a carbon footprint! Silly citizen. :D)

So yeah. Wow. This Cap and Trade thing is seriously freaking me out, and it isn’t over a matter of higher utility bills. I can see it chipping away at our freedoms... and there’s no telling where this chipping might stop, because if it’s for the name of “greenness” and if it’s sanctioned by the Holy Obama, why, that makes it “right!”

But lemme tell you, it’s not right by me. So Americans, wake up already. Our freedom is being taken away by little laws, not an overnight revolution. Let’s not get to the point where you need a card stamped to leave your state... or the country. :| And for now, hope the Senate turns down Cap and Trade! ><

In other news... kinda a funny story. I lost my balance on the porch behind my house yesterday and wound up falling through a wooden railing six or seven feet onto my head. I think I sprained my neck... but bizarrely enough, I also decimated both my ankles (at least temporarily), which has made it difficult if not impossible to even walk. Jeeze... XD

Also... a belated RIP to Billy Mays. He brought a smile to many a face with his crazy ads, and he was prematurely cut down in his prime. May his memory live on...

(*Because think about it... if we decrease energy-production here in the US for the sake of green technology, other countries around the world will just make up for the differance using their own unregulated and more effecient processes. I'm telling you... let the market determine the means of production! >< (Money makes the world go 'round...))

I think the world as gone OUT OF CONTROL ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GLOBAL WARMING! Its Just the Earth is going through a Warm Cycle! ITS COMPLETELY NORMAL!! I can understand people wanting to take good care of the earth and I think that is cool! But over doing going green stuff is JUST INSAIN! And Making Green Cars and Trucks is pretty Neat, but I noticed that the Green cars are more Techanogiy than Safety Features and Size. I DON'T LIKE THAT AT ALL! Beacuse If those Cars get into accidents, which I seen, They are easily Crushed like a Empty pop can! THEY NEED TO MAKE THE GREEN CARS AND TRUCKS IN GOOD SIZES, HAVE SAFTEY FEATURES AND BE MADE STRONG TO LAST THROUGH WEATHER AND ACCIDENTS!
And OUCH! I hope your neck and your ankles heal well, so you can feel better again!
And yeah, Billy Mays had a Cool Personality for different TV Products. He Always put a smile on my face too! Rest In Peace Billy Mays.

I've heard about the Cap & Trade Bill. I haven't been keeping up too much with the news lately, but my mother has. The whole thing is making her so emotionally angry, I constantly hear her saying that "Obama is bankrupting our country." I, on the other hand, see it from a different perspective. While I agree with her that yes, a lot of the laws that Obama wants to pass would be hurting our country instead of helping, I wouldn't go as far as getting overly emotional and panicky. A President (and I'm referring to all American Presidents, not just Obama) is only a figure-head, responsible for making inspirational-sounding speeches and decisions based on his view of America and the rest of the world. It'll hurt us ONLY if we allow it. We as a nation have more power than we realize. We all just need to take the time to calm down, do some research, realize what's within our control vs. what isn't, and use all the knowledge that we acquire to endure these hard times ... and FIGHT! :shakefist:

Well, there's my rambling for the day. Sorry to hear about your ankles. *winces*

My two cents on this matter is that such a thing can be helpful (necessary), just probably not in the US. It would work (or maybe be urgently needed) in a place like China, where over-reliance on coal for electricity production (they're working on it, but it's moving far too slowly) is getting to the point where, as I call it, "the sunset sometimes doesn't let go" (that is, most days the sky remains red/orange well past midnight and always looks overcast during the day except immediately after a typhoon). By contrast, in most towns/cities in the States it's mostly blue skies and the overcast days usually come from actual clouds and not smog. And the night sky is usually dark. My point is that climate change or not, that's not the only purpose of green technology. But if we're going to focus on the air improvement that green technology can bring then we need to work on the biggest offenders first; the US is small fry in comparison to China.

My personal anecdote concerning this- every year I go from China to the States (while in China I live in Shanghai, while in the States I live in Nashville). Usually in China I will have breathing problems and sometimes find myself short of breath. This doesn't happen in the States. That says something about air quality in Shanghai, and it's not good. Doesn't help any that so many factories are located here.

(Hope this makes sense)

And my condolences about your injury. Hope you get better soon!
:iconatticus-w:
Ay, exactly! I mean, I'm not even one to doubt global warming per se... although records do show that the Earth has actually been cooling for the last ten years, apparently. I'm more than a bit ticked off that so much unproven "humans did it" science is being used to justify extreme new legislation, however. There's even been talk of the EPA literally censoring scientific reports that disagree with the Obama agenda. ><

And making "green" cars safe? Ha, it can't be done. XD Safe cars are heavy. If you want to make a car run on solar power, it's gonna have a hard enough time moving its human occupant. Try moving a heavy steel frame and you just about forget it. XD

Anyway, thanks! I'm recovering from my injuries quite well, I guess. No apparent lasting damage. :D

:iconatticus-w:
Yes, you are absolutely correct! We could stand up to him if we wanted... the problem of course is the "Obama-mania" that this country is still in. With virtually every media outlet completely obsessed with the man, his views and his science is constantly being presented as fact, and we're becoming brainwashed. I know it's a tired joke, but seriously... if Obama supported kicking puppies, so would the US population. So... I have very little confidence that anyone's going to fight. >> Maybe I'll be proved wrong, and I'll be happy. XD

And thanks. My legs are doing much better, and I can walk just fine again. :D

:iconatticus-w:
Now that's a very interesting firsthand observation right there. Ironic, then, that the newest laws in the US are probably going to drive energy production way down here, where I guess we're pretty good at keeping it clean already. (I mean, after all, the US coal industry already has who knows how many regulations on it... they've got scrubbers and low-sulfar coal and who knows what other technologies to cut down on pollution that less-regulated industries probably don't have to worry about.) Jeeze... we can be a silly bunch sometimes, can't we. :(

Thank you much, too. I'm actually doing much better now... can walk and everything!

Not true. I was watching Fox News last night, and the news journalist was highlighting many of the stimuluses Obama has passed that were supposedly meant to "help the economy" when they're doing anything but the sort, such as one for studying the odor of swine. And the journalist who was talking about them was trying to prove the point on how "ridiculous" they are. So not all media news is in favor of Obama or gives into the Obama-mania.

And as far as everyone giving into the Obama-mania ... I highly doubt that. Yes, there are some people who get really obsessed with Obama's image, but I don't believe it's to the extent that the news makes it out to be. Not everything on the media news is the truth. I voted for Obama, and although his "Change" speeches inspired me greatly, I didn't vote on him solely for his speeches. I did my homework before I voted.

Good to hear that your legs are better. I've twisted my ankle a few times, and I know that's no fun.

Yep!

And You can say that again! If They want to make Green Cars and Trucks safe, they need more strong steel frames & Bodies and plenty of safety features. And Not all Batteries or wiring! And yep.

And Your Very Welcome Atticus! ^^ And That's Good! ^^

Well, perhaps, then... I guess being from Massachusetts doesn't help my perspective any. 'Round here, Fox is hardly considered a credible news source. XD (And honestly, people here will vote Democrat NO MATTER WHAT ridiculous stunts our politicians pull on us.) But maybe some of the other outlets will take up a bit of the two-sided perspective, too-- help bring debate to my crazy neck of the woods, via the channels folks here are watching. Time will tell, I guess... XD

So yeah... really, as long as people know what they're voting for (and what their elected officials are doing), I can't blame them for their decisions. That's democracy for ya!

My parents are hard-core, right-wing conservatives (my mother especially, who is registered Republican), even though they'll claim to be moderate if you were to ask them. I'm registered Independant, simply because I don't know which political side I favor. I do know that my political views are more liberal, simply because every time some tells me "That's just the way it is!" every time I ask a question that seems awkward to them or express a certain opinion that is considered unacceptable to the other side's view, I always respond "By whose definition?" or "Whose standards?" Also, some of my closest friends are left-wing politically and their views make more sense to me than the hard-core conservative view. I guess that's probably because the conservative view is constantly rammed down my throat so much that I have a hard time dealing with it. I know, that's not really a valid excuse ... But hey, who's to say which excuse is the correct one? That's democracy! :giggle:
