Description

I once suggested (to myself) that had diesels evolved in accordance with the Whyte system, there would be fewer steam fans today. (Interpret that as you will.)

Pretty much inspired by diesels like the British Class 08 and a nagging curiosity as to what engines would look like today if that school of design had caught on. The carbody is more or less taken off an F-M Train Master.

This actual pic was redrawn and colored recently from a sketch found on the same notebook page as [link] , so it's been around a while...

Unusual combination. Most siderod diesels are switchers without pilot wheels. Most locomotives with both siderods and pilot wheels are boxcab electrics (Sweden, N&W). The only hood unit I can think of with both is an old experimental 1-B-1 gas turbine for the US Army.

Still, it doesn't look impossible in terms of time frame. It would probably have been built in the early 1950s. In a generic sense, of course, since no specific country built this. The idea of mainline hood units hadn't caught on in those countries still using siderod drives.

I like the touch of the renumbering.
